Making merit on the 10th lunar month is grandly celebrated every year in Nakhon Si Thammarat. Held from the first to 15th waning moon in September, the event marks the occasion when children who’ve move away from home for work returning to their families to make merit and pay respect to their ancestors.

This practice derived from the beliefs that for 15 days in September, the deceased ones would be allowed to come up from other realms to meet their living relatives. During this time, the livings would try to appease the spirits by taking food to temples to make merit for them.

The festival’s highlights include religious activities to make merit for those who passed away. It is one of the important religious and cultural events that draw not only the locals but also a large number of visitors to join the event every year.

A magnificent colourful procession with folk performances will be held on a day in September from the city hall onto Ratchadamnoen Road through to Wat Phra Mahathat. Throughout 10-day, there will be competition of best designed food trays for merit-making, light and sound presentation and a local food and goods fair.
